DAMASCUS, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Over 10,000 people have been killed since the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition started its operations against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria in September of 2014, a monitor group reported on Tuesday.

Altogether 2,815 civilians, including 655 children, and 7,396 IS militants were among those killed, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based watchdog group said the U.S.-led coalition continues to carry out airstrikes in IS-held areas in Syria despite the fact that the terror-designated group is controlling only 3 percent of the Syrian territories following their defeat in their major strongholds in northern and eastern Syria.

The coalition has enabled the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to capture IS de facto capital in Syria's northern city of Raqqa.

The Syrian government has for long condemned the U.S. coalition, slamming it as "illegitimate" as it's fighting in Syria without the consent of the Syrian government.

Due to the civilian causalities, the Syrian government urged the UN to dissolve the coalition.
