Transport services affected by heavy rain in India's Mumbai city

NEW DELHI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The incessant monsoon rains in India's financial capital Mumbai Tuesday affected road, rail and air transport, officials said.

The water logging in the low lying areas has flooded the streets and railway tracks, thereby causing traffic snarls.

"Heavy rain continues to batter Mumbai and its neighbouring areas like Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli and Palghar," an official said. "The city and its suburbs have been receiving heavy rain since Saturday. The rain has flooded many roads thereby stalling trains and slowed traffic to crawl in places that are water logged."

Authorities have cancelled some trains while others are running late by 10 to 15 minutes as tracks remain submerged.

Reports said on Monday, Mumbai received five times the average rainfall for this season. The Meteorological department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain until Thursday.

The airlines said there could be a delay in flights in Mumbai due to rains.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the Navy and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been put into service to help people.

"Indian Navy, Disaster Management cell and all concerned departments are working hard to provide every possible assistance to Mumbaikars (residents of Mumbai)," Fadnavis said in a statement. "Around 150 additional pumps deployed to clear the water. We are monitoring and taking care of situation minutely."

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds was reported in several places during morning.
