SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, July 13 (Xinhua) -- More than 90 insurgents from both the Taliban and Islamic State (IS) group have been killed as clash erupted between the rival groups in the northern Jawzjan province, an army spokesman in the northern region, Mohammad Hanif Rezai, said Friday.
"Up to 93 militants from both the Taliban and IS outfit have been killed as clash erupted between the rival groups in Qush Tipa district of Jawzjan province on Thursday and fighting has been continuing," Rezai told Xinhua.
According to the official, 43 IS militants including some foreign nationals have been killed in the ongoing fighting and 32 others have been captured by Taliban insurgents.
Three women are also among those captured alive by Taliban, claimed another official who refused to be named, in provincial capital Shiberghan.
Taliban militants, according to Rezai, launched coordinated offensives on the positions of IS group in several parts of Qush Tipa district and villages along the neighboring Darzab district on Thursday night and both sides have hugely suffered.
The security forces in Qush Tipa district are on high alert, the official asserted.
Qush Tipa and Darzab districts have been regarded as the hotbed of IS militants and both the restive districts have been the scenes of fierce fighting between Taliban and IS group over the past nearly two years.
Neither Taliban nor IS group has made comments on the report.
