NEW DELHI, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indian film superstar Kamal Haasan has announced that he will enter politics by launching his own political party in southern state of Tamil Nadu next month.

Haasan, who works mostly in Tamil cinema, has also said that he will also embark on a state-wide tour of Tamil Nadu on Feb. 21, the day he launches his own party.

"At the commencement of the journey, I intend to announce the name of my political party along with the guiding principles we intend to live by," Haasan has said in a statement.

The 63-year-old actor has won several awards, including three National Film Awards, the second-most by any Indian actor, in his over 50-year career.

He started as a child artist in 1960 in Tamil language film Kalathur Kannamma, for which he won the President's Gold Medal.

Haasan's announcement came days after another Indian superstar Rajinikanth, who has a huge following in the country, announced his entry into politics.

The 67-year-old, who also works mostly in Tamil cinema, said on Dec. 31 that he would form his own political party ahead of the next assembly election in Tamil Nadu.

The state has been in politcal turmoil since the death of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa last year. Jayalalitha was also a former film star.
