SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight with Indian troops in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Muniward in Anantnag district, 51 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight started this morning between militants and government forces in Muniward village here and during the gunfight two militants were killed," a senior police official posted in Anantnag told Xinhua. "The bodies of militants have been recovered and two assault rifles belonging to these militants were seized from the spot."

According to police, the village was cordoned off early morning following specific intelligence information about presence of militants inside a residential house.

Indian army or police have not suffered any damage in the stand-off, police said.

Authorities have imposed restrictions in Anantnag town and outskirts as a precautionary measure and suspended Internet services in the district.

Police said they were ascertaining the identity of slain militants.

Locals said they heard sound of gunfire and blasts in the village and the gunfight lasted for around four hours.

As per locals, the house from where militants were firing on army and police positions has completely got damaged.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.
