SUVA, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Farmers of Drasa in Lautoka, the second largest city of Fiji, have been advised to consider multi-cropping for better soil utilization and improved yields.

According to a government statement on Wednesday, this was relayed to the members of the Warabetia and Marasa Herbs and Vegetable Cluster Farmers by Fiji's Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu during a recent visit to farmers in the western part of the island nation.

"Farmers need to practice multi-cropping which is very important due to the changes in climatic conditions currently being experienced. This will sustain farmers during such conditions," Seruiratu said.

He also encouraged sugarcane farmers to work smartly by utilizing their vacant land for either vegetable or livestock farming.

"Farmers need to plant according to the market demand. You also need to make full use of the available land," he said.

Seruiratu reiterated the importance of forming clusters as it would foster partnership between farmers and could further enhance individual farmers' productivity through the cluster model.

"When farmers are grouped together into clusters, it is easier for the Ministry of Agriculture to assist, advise, organize and determine the mode of collection for production in collection centers for the benefit of farmers," he added.

More than 100,000 households in Fiji engage in agricultural activities such as growing crops, raising livestock, fishing, freshwater aquaculture or marine aquaculture.
