UNITED NATIONS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Security Council on Tuesday requested the UN chief to establish a special political mission (SPM) in Haiti to replace the current UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH).

Resolution 2476, adopted by the 15-member Council, requests the secretary-general to establish "the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti," or BINUH, using its French acronym beginning on Oct. 16, 2019 and for an initial period of 12 months, "headed by a special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to be appointed as swiftly as possible."

The mandate of the MINUJUSTH will expire on Oct. 15, 2019.

The resolution requests the secretary-general to report to the Council on the implementation of the newly adopted resolution every 120 days, rather than every 90 days, as had been the case with regard to the MINUJUSTH.

The United States, as penholder, began negotiations on the text for the SPM in mid-June.

The resolution calls on BINUH to assist the government of Haiti with such duties as planning and executing elections, reinforcing the Haitian National Police through training on human rights and responding to gang and sexual and gender-based violence, improving administration of Haitian prison facilities, and strengthening the justice sector through adoption and implementation of key legislation.

The Council on April 12 adopted Resolution 2466 and decided to extend the mandate of the MINUJUSTH for the last time, paving the way for a transition to a non-peacekeeping UN presence in Haiti.

Resolution 2466 marks the end of more than 15 years of UN peacekeeping in Haiti.
