Commentary: Hong Kong not a pawn for U.S. to contain China

HONG KONG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The passage of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 by U.S. congressional committees is nothing but blatant interference in China's domestic affairs and once again reveals U.S. evil intention to use Hong Kong as a pawn to contain China.

After Hong Kong's return to the motherland in 1997, the policies of "one country, two systems," "the people of Hong Kong governing Hong Kong," and a high degree of autonomy have been fully and faithfully implemented in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in strict compliance with China's Constitution and the Basic Law of the HKSAR.

With strong support from the Chinese central government, Hong Kong remains as a free port and territory with separate customs. In areas such as the economy, finance, shipping, communications, tourism, culture and sports, it maintains and develops relationships with countries, regions and relevant international organizations on its own under the name "Hong Kong, China." Such are the facts that no one can deny.

The motive of certain U.S. politicians is clear: they try to maintain U.S. hegemony and advance their own political and economic interests. It has nothing to do with "human rights" or "democracy."

That is why people like Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo received "Hong Kong independence" activists and gave their disruptive activities thumps-up.

Now comes the so-called Hong Kong-related legislation. It resembles the tricks the U.S. politicians often played to support the "Xinjiang independence," "Tibet independence" and "Taiwan independence" elements.

To be clear, their wordplay is merely a disguise for their scheme to contain China by bringing chaos to, this time, Hong Kong.

While the U.S. politicians -- perhaps sipping coffee in their comfortable office in Washington -- plot disruptions thousands of miles across the Pacific, Hong Kong people are fearing for their safety.

For more than three months, black-clad protesters, armed with homemade spears, petrol bombs, bricks and clubs, have vandalized public facilities, assaulted passers-by and disrupted law and order, endangering Hong Kong people's safety and crippling the city's economy.

Hong Kong residents are longing for the restoration of peace, but the United States further stoked violence by most recently playing with the so-called Hong Kong-related legislation.

Undoubtedly this sent a wrong and dangerous signal and could exacerbate the already escalated violence.

The "Hong Kong independence" activists such as Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Nathan Law Kwun-chung do not represent the majority of Hong Kong people.

The Hong Kong society is clearly saying "no" to the U.S. interference. People from all walks of life are trying to make their voices heard by publishing open letters in newspapers and writing to the HKSAR government.

Hong Kong is an inseparable part of China. The wicked attempts by the United States to use Hong Kong to contain China will not work.

A chaotic Hong Kong is not a good thing for the United States either. Hong Kong is an important trading partner of the United States and hosts more than 80,000 U.S. citizens and 1,300 U.S. companies.

Hong Kong is not a pawn of the United States, and nor are its residents. They deserve peace, stability and prosperity, just like all the people of the world.
