BERLIN, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Goals from Memphis Depay and Martin Terrier helped Olympique Lyon to beat wasteful Leipzig 2-0 on the road in UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Leipzig wasted a number of chances and got punished by the visitors from Lyon, who benefitted on a poor defense and staged a clinical chance conversion in front of the goal.

The hosts started highly motivated into the clash and created the first golden chance with six minutes played when Timo Werner pulled wide from inside the box.

Unlike Leipzig, Lyon capitalized on their first chance as Depay slotted home a blocked shot from the edge of the box with 11 minutes into the game.

Leipzig were shocked but they continued to press forward as Werner squandered another chance after failing to level the scores with only Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to beat in the 23rd minute.

At the half hour mark, Leipzig should have marked the equalizer but Marcelo blocked Yussuf Poulsen's effort from very close range.

The visitors thought they had doubled their advantage before the break but the referee ruled Depay's goal offside.

After the restart, Leipzig needed some time to gain a foothold into the match. Hence, the hosts had to wait until the 52nd minute before Marcel Halstenberg's effort forced Lopes into action.

Julian Nagelsmann's men gained momentum but still they lacked precision as Poulsen and Marcel Sabizter came close at the hour mark.

However, the goals were scored at the other end of the pitch as a moment of madness from Leipzig's defender Nordi Mukiele allowed Terrier to round Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi for the 2-0 lead in the 65th minute.

Leipzig pressed frenetically to pull one back but Lyon defended very well and kept the hosts on the distance to take all three points.

"We played a good game and dominated but we made two mistakes and invited Lyon to score twice. We cannot do this kind of mistakes on this level. Also we missed our chances whereas Lyon scored with every shot on target," Leipzig's head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

With the result, Lyon share the top spot with FC Zenit (both four points) in Group G, followed by Leipzig (3 points) and SL Benfica (0 points).
